The Story

In late 2014, two friends planned to meet. Nah! We were friends, so it wasn’t a date. Don’t get any ideas already! Well, it was just a meeting over coffee. One of them had recently lost their job, and the other was trying to leave his. They discussed a few possibilities of building an enterprise. The field they chose was translation and documentation services in Nepal – a field in which both of them had excelled in their previous jobs. But without any experience in building a business, they jumped in, and thus Nepal Language and Research Solutions came into being.

Having some skills, however, wasn’t enough. Working for a market someone had created and developing your own are two different stories. Trust me here, getting a ‘salary’ paycheck was much easier; creating one wasn’t! But then there were friends who referred us to our first client. We were all in to complete the first task. And there we were – we got the first sale! We made some money! That money helped us make our company legal – with the money, we paid the fees of a lawyer to navigate the legalities of incorporating our company.

Now, finding a decent office was another challenge – not because Kathmandu suddenly ran out of vacant apartments, but we couldn’t afford it. So, we continued at a small garage-like place. It took us nearly a year to afford a better place. And finally, in the next October, we moved to a bigger (and cleaner!) office space. We too were moved; our aspirations–oh! they just jumped off the roof!

Now, with a better office space, the revenues had to be better, if not big. That was a challenge, a liability and no money to spend on marketing. So what did we do? We talked. We talked. We talked and talked and talked until things started to get better. Alongside delivered, we delivered on our promises. So, it was a cycle of talking and delivering, delivering and talking – a cycle that is still ongoing. It is not like we would catch anyone passing by and pitch our venture, but we would pitch to anyone we assessed as a potential client. Not many heard our pleas (a pitch with so much enthusiasm can’t just be called a pitch right?!), but some did, and that was enough to give us the much needed boost!

Fast forward eight years, we have served over 70 national and international clients, translated over 10 million words into different languages, expanded our team to over 20 regularly serving consultants and employees, provided interpretation services for over 500 events, and worked with partners worldwide! Most importantly, we have supported our society in understanding things better!

We chose to translate our passion into eliminating barriers to knowledge, and now we proudly stand as the largest translation and localization service provider in Nepal.
